World’s Oldest Paper Goes Digital

Founded in 1645, Sweden’s Post-och Inrikes Tidningar newspaper is the oldest in the world. And now it is embracing a paperless society by going digital! And so are most information these days – easily available(except the copyright protection materials).

There a various benefits associated to the limited publication of newspapers. The major impact, is reduction in the use of paper, hence a better environment. Secondly,  is easier to reach the vast majority of subscribers. Also, it is easily accessible from anywhere, without the need of carrying the newspaper around. Personally, I would prefer this compared to normal papers.

Of course, not everything would be 100% flawless. People still prefer the feel of holding a paper and reading it rather than staring at the computer screen or small palmtops.  From the producers point of view, its difficult to reach out to conventional people or places where people have limited Internet connectivity. I would definitely like something to hold and read onmy tube journeys. London Lite and London Paper do keep me entertained if I can get my hands on one, or if it is not too crowded to be opening the huge paper and read it on the tube!

Reading this news brought back memories of the last term. Looking back at our Entrepreneurship idea of E-Flex, I just had a discussion with XQ and he mentioned that Phillips is coming out with something  similar that we planned to do, using GSM instead. Interesting. Being an engineering student, we would definitely want to fit in as innovators, early adopters or worst case, early majority. This is with reference to Everett Roger’s diffusion theory on how a new product is spread across in society. Falling into the lower 50% would be something we would definitely want to avoid.
